Anger is everywhere

  • We live in an angry society. All around the country, Americans are on edge and permanently stressed. As a result, it doesn’t take much for ordinary daily interactions to turn ugly.
  • Parking lots and roads are filled with too many cars.
  • Budget cutbacks are forcing fewer people to do more work.
  • Inflation, coupled with stingier employers and clients, means there’s often never enough money to meet necessities--let alone the occasional luxuries we all used to take for granted.
  • The stress of waiting “for the next 9/11” has everyone waiting for the “other shoe to drop.”

Whole segments of our population are simmering with anger, anger which can be unleashed—with horrifying consequences—following the least provocation.

Uncontrolled anger can change your life…In a heartbeat . . . and not for the better!

The consequences of a single explosion of uncontrolled anger can permanently change your life ,destroying your quality of life for years to come with pain, loneliness, and financial ruin:

  • The driver you’re “getting even with,” points a gun at you, causing you to lose control and cause a horrific accident- -while he drives away unscathed--leaving you with years of painful physical rehabilitation, guilt, criminal charges, and legal fees.
  • You fail to control your temper on just one occasion—and a relationship and family it took decades to nurture ends--leaving you alone, in debt, and with a criminal record.
  • Because of increasing complaints from co-workers and customers, your boss fires you and refuses to write a letter of recommendation--making it near impossible for you to find another job.
  • A parking lot scuffle gets out of control, leaving you with a career-destroying criminal record, years of restorative dentistry, and a forthcoming civil suit, which not costs tens thousands of dollars in legal fees but also makes it impossible to sell or refinance your home.
  • After months of lingering pain, an argument gets ugly, shouts are exchanged, and suddenly you feel a suffocating chest pain and end up in the emergency room—before going “under the knife.”
  • Although you’ve successfully handled similar situations before, just this once you to lose your cool and react with unnecessary force, resulting in the loss of your job, harmful publicity, legal fees, and possible criminal action against you.

Clearly, the consequences of a moment’s loss of control can be devastating to you and everyone concerned… you, your family, your victim, and their family.

Prior to your angry outburst, your life might not have been perfect, but now it may never again be the same!

What you can, and cannot, do

Anger management begins by recognizing that you can’t solve society’s anger problems; you simply cannot control the behavior of others.

But, what you can do is not allow anger to control you! You cannot:

  •  “Will” other drivers to stop cutting you off in traffic.
  • “Force” employers to stop setting unrealistic goals for you at work.
  • “Insist” your loved ones understand your point of view.
  •  “Impose” peaceful behavior on others during stressful events.

You can, however, control how you respond when anger threatens to get the best of you. You can respond in a positive way, or you can react in a negative way.

The decisions are yours. Thus, anger management doesn’t mean that you have to give up anger- -anger is sometimes a positive emotion- -but it does mean you learn to control how you respond to anger.

The power to build or destroy is yours

Angry situations always contain a pivotal “moment of ignition” when the situation can either be peacefully resolved, or explode into a situation that is tragic for all concerned.

At the “moment of ignition, when your emotions threaten to get out of control, you can either:

  • Continue to fan the flames, escalating the anger even more.
  • Or, you can turn down the heat and find an alternative way to handle the situation.

The decision is yours

If you choose to continue gambling with your life, and possibly give in to angry impulses at the wrong time, you’re on your own.

But, if you choose to avoid a potentially tragic situation before it’s too late, we can help.

The exercises are excellent and thought provoking. The many checklists are great tools for self-assessment and also help the reader to understand the problems associated with anger.
